Nojorkam (Norbert Schepens)

Nojorkam (pseudonym of Schepens Norbert Joris Kamiel) was a Belgian artist who was born in Ghent in 1911 and who died in 2003 in Wachtebeke. He was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, illustrator and author. The pseudonym was simply composed of the first letters of his first names Norbert joris Kamiel. Education at the Academy in Ghent under O. Coddron. During his many travels, he came into contact with ancient culture, including in Greece and Rome, but also found inspiration in his hometown, the neighboring countries and in Scandinavia. He often built his exhibitions around one theme; that could be a civilization, a country, a region. Flowers or herbs were also often treated. From 1945 onwards, numerous sea and underwater views were created, later he gave his special view of the Lys region, the Italian cities and landscapes (1947), the floral wealth (Gentse Floralies, 1950), sunny Spain, and afterwards also the barren Norwegian landscape. From the press: 'Nojorkam made his debut in 1930, simultaneously pursued artistic and scientific studies and was the first in our country to include histology and crystallography in the art domain. His universal interest in nature, people and culture is homogeneous in his works. Not only was he a painter of deep sea and high mountains, of flora and natural symbiosis, he was also a sensitive portraitist,' and 'N. has scanned the horizons of the concrete, he inhaled the breath of all the currents of the mind, he tried to discover the secret of all past civilizations, driven as he was by a secret fire to see through the ground of things and to destroy them himself with ten passing steps.” (G. Van Severen). As an illustrator he printed his plates himself and wrote or calligraphed the text himself . the s-pseudonym NOJORKAM was simply composed of the first letters of his first names Norbert Joris Kamiel. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
