Portenart Jeanne

Jeanne Portenart was a Belgian artist born in 1911 in Brussels and died there in 1991. She was a painter. Training at the Institute of Art Crafts in Etterbeek under Philippot (1939-1943) and at the Academy in Brussels under H. Van Haelen (1941-1943) among others. It leaned towards numerous movements from the 20th century. Initially worked in a surrealistic way, evolved into lyrical abstraction, went through a neo-Symbolist period, leaned towards Fantasmagie and also delivered poetic figurative work, including circus scenes. From the press about her lyrical abstract work: 'J.P. shows us a lively and living painting in which the impressions of nature (preferably those of a paradise spring) are transformed into lyrical expressions of an optimistic view of life. The pleasure, yes the pleasure of painting, slips right over it. We see a world of metamorphosis, transposition, transcendence, a world seen by a painting poet or a painter.' (1967). Work in the museums in Brussels, Ghent, Leuven, Ostend, and in the Print Room in Brussels. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
