De Winter Jan

Jan De Winter was a professional artist from Mechelen born in 1936 and died in 2020. He was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, cartoonist, scenographer and costume designer. As a cartoonist he worked under the pseudonym Duncan. He was trained as a woodcarver at the Academy of Visual Arts in Mechelen (from 1966) and at the Higher Institute in Antwerp under A. Zarina. He was a teacher of observational drawing, color and design in Molenbeek. He has created characters, figures in an interior or a landscape, as well as compositions with figures. He was straightforward, uninhibited, passionate and socially critical and filled his works with colorful scenes of ridicule and resistance to petty bourgeoisie, authority and authority. We find a rich imagination in his works. The last months of his life he worked on a book about his cartoons and on a documentary about his life and work.

From the press: “Initially, J.D.W. He was deeply obsessed with the symbolism of birth and the umbilical cord was always present in his great compositions. People, albeit in a special appearance, with their pendulum arrangement were the main theme of his many canvases.” And “Jan De Winter was one of the most talented and greatest Mechelen artists of his generation. He was exceptionally versatile and in his work he followed his idiosyncratic path: uncompromising.” (Jan Smets, 2020) and following his death: “With Jan, Mechelen loses one of its most talented artists. As a convinced Provo and co-founder of the renowned cultural café 'Herten Aas', he gave color and substance to the Mechelen art scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s.” (Marc Van Camp, 2020)

Jan De Winter was laureate of The Young Flemish Painter in 1968 and of the Koopalprijs for painting in Ostend in 1980. In the 1980s he won several prizes with his cartoons at Kartoenales in Kortrijk (1983), in Kruishoutem. (1985), at Heusden-Zolder (1986), at Tongeren (1986) and at Beringen (1987).
