A powerful and technically refined piece by Belgian painter Pol Verswijver (b. 1949), titled Stilleven, sardines op tafel. This 1975 painting features three silver-toned sardines on a white plate, rendered with razor-sharp detail and striking realism. The composition is simple but captivating in its balance and mastery of light. The heads of the fish are turned toward the viewer, creating subtle visual tension in the still life.
As is typical of Verswijver’s style, the scene is set against a sober, monochrome background that allows the subject to stand out. His approach is emblematic of the New Classical Antwerp School, where precision, harmony and classical techniques merge. The influence of the Flemish Primitives is clearly visible in his refined brushwork and mastery of chiaroscuro.
The painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner and is in excellent condition. It comes in a matching gilded frame that enhances its visual impact. A rare find for collectors of contemporary realism with classical roots.
The black background visible in the photo was used for illustrative purposes and is not part of the artwork.
