Abstracte zeilboten – Léon Smets – 20th Century

This work by Léon Smets presents an abstract depiction of sailboats, built up from strict geometric planes in muted shades of blue, green, and purple. Smets (Mechelen, 1895 – 1980) studied at the Academies of Antwerp and Berchem. Around 1960, he evolved from an impressionistic style to a strict constructivist and linear approach, especially in his marine works. A former rower and sailor, water and boats were an inexhaustible source of inspiration. His oeuvre includes, in addition to marine scenes, portraits, figures, dancers, and a short abstract period. This work comes from the collection of an heiress of the artist.
