Smets Léon

Léon Smets was a Belgian artist who was born in Mechelen in 1895 and who died there in 1980. He was a painter, graphic artist and glass painter. In 1897 his parents settled in Antwerp. Education at the Academies in Antwerp and Berchem. Was fascinated by the Antwerp harbor and ships. Evolved around 1960 from impressionism to a strict constructivist and linear vision for his navies. Started as a self-taught artist with etchings. From the press about this: 'Under his heavily printed etchings and the finer burins, we note gems of maritime mood and persistent lines.' Founded the Pentagram in 1950, in 1965 the Circle of Antwerp harbor and Scheldt painters. In 1961 took part in the Jubelcelebration on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Academy in Berchem/Antwerp. Work in the Print Rooms in Antwerp and Brussels, among others.
