Belgische kunstenaar Anto Carte

Carte Anto

Anto Carte was a Belgian painter, lithographer and illustrator born in 1886 and died in 1954. He does not belong to a school. In Anto Carte's work the human figure is key. At the beginning of his career, influenced by symbolism, he represents mythological and imaginary characters. Then his paintings reflect a number of favorite themes, such as the blind 'Brueghel' characters and musicians. The world of labour inspires him a lot, especially that of the coal mines of his native Borinage, and that of the farmers. Deeply religious as he is, he also uses many religious subjects in his paintings. After his trip to Florence in 1925, more festive themes appear, such as acrobats and harlequins.
