Anto Carte was a Belgian painter, lithographer and illustrator born in 1886 and died in 1954. He does not belong to a school. The human figure is central to the work of Anto Carte. At the beginning of his career, influenced by symbolism, he represents mythological and imaginary characters. Then his painted work reflects a number of favorite themes, such as the 'Brueghel' characters who are blind and musicians. The world of work inspires him a lot, especially that of the coal mines of his native Borinage, and that of the farmers.
