Martin Alfred
Alfred Martin was a Belgian artist born in Liège in 1888 and died in Stavelot in 1950. He was a painter, illustrator, wood engraver and poster designer. Took evening courses at the Academy in Liège conducted by A. De Witte and Em. Berchmans. Also received advice and support from A. Donnay and A. Rassenfosse. During trips to Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, he refined his landscape painting technique. Realized, among others, Ardennes landscapes, genre scenes, portraits, figures, nudes. Over the years, his design has become more sober and synthesized. From 1913 he was a member of the Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Liège, from 1922 of the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire in Ghent, from 1946 of the Art and Knowledge Circle in Ghent. In 1926 and 1923 he painted triptychs for the Saint-Denis church in Liège and for the Basilica in Chèvremont. Illustrated, among other things, numerous folkloric works. Exhibited with the Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Liège from 1913 to 1950. Work to be explored in the Museum in Liège and in the Print Room in Brussels.
