Wortel Ans

Ans Wortel was a Dutch artist, born in Alkmaar in 1929 and passed away in Hilvarenbeek in 1996. She was a painter, gouachist, draughtswoman, etcher, and designer of collages. She mainly worked with mixed media. From the press: "A.W. evokes a poetic yet slightly ironic world. She portrays human events in a highly suggestive language." and "Her work exudes great visual power, almost reminiscent of fairy tale illustrations — though, as in fairy tales, with a grim undertone, a hint of terror. Dreams mixed with nightmares, fairies turning into witches, gnomes becoming dragons. Love and fear come together in a colorful, figurative imagination." Ans Wortel exhibited regularly from 1960 onward. She is listed in Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars. (Piron)
