Van Sompel Willy

Willy Van Sompel is a Belgian artist who was born in Ghent in 1948. He is a painter and author. Self-taught. Frequently stayed in New York. During the 1970s he was mainly active in film and theater, including organizing various theater, music and poetry festivals and exhibitions. Author and publisher of scripts, plays, poetry collections, concept projects. Only then began to devote himself to painting. His first paintings already contain irony (1980-1981) and depict naive landscapes. In 1982 he showed himself as a more expressionistic and "wild" painter. For his more recent work he often chooses everyday, easily recognizable and sometimes naive cliché images. From the press: “W.S. uses aerosol and stencils where it suits him. In decorations or vegetal patterns he hides figurative shapes as surprise elements. He assembles extra-pictorial means (glitter, plaster relief, plastic soldiers, etc.) to create trompe l'oeil effects. Moreover, he juxtaposes various painting styles to add to the confusion.” (H.P., 1985) Work purchased by the Flemish Community in 1982/1983 and 1990. Mentioned in BAS II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. Source: Piron
