Willem de Klerk was a Dutch artist who was born in Dordrecht in 1800 and who died there in 1876. He was a Dutch painter, draftsman and watercolourist. He learned drawing from Pieter Hofmann and painting from Adrianus van der Koogh. He was a landscape painter with a typical romantic style. He made several trips together with painter Matthijs Quispel. In 1927/28 the trip went to the Ardennes and Luxembourg and in 1932 to Breda. In 1935 they went via the Nijmegen region to the German Rhineland and in 1938 the journey went to Bavaria, Bohemia and Saxony. De Klerk's early work was in the tradition of Jacob van Strij and his later landscapes were influenced by Barend Cornelis Koekkoek.
