Wiethase Edgard
Edgard Wiethase was a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1881 and died in Uccle in 1965. He was a painter and watercolourist. He trained at the Academy in Antwerp under the guidance of Ch. Boom, Ch. Mertens and P. Verhaert, and at the Higher Institute in Antwerp under F. Van Leemputten. He worked in the tradition of Flemish animal painting, with a particular fondness for foals, mares and stallions in their typical movements. He often painted on a prepared underlayer, which helped to suggest the vibrant, trembling motions. His matte handling of the paint sometimes recalls the fresco technique. He also painted landscapes, outdoor scenes with figures, interiors, portraits, still lifes and flowers. His work shows a realistic style tending towards luminism, while his watercolours are distinguished by a bright and colourful palette. He was a member of the group Als Ik Kan. His work can be found in the Museum of Antwerp. He is listed in BAS I and in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists (Piron).
