Vinche Lionel

Lionel Vinche is a Belgian artist, born in Antoing in 1936. He is a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, designer of murals and theater sets. He studied at the Academy in Brussels but was largely self-taught. At the age of 20, he joined a shipping company and traveled to the United States and Africa (1956-1957). He also worked as an actor in several Brussels theaters (1959-1962). He began painting in 1961 and settled in Brussels in 1982. His works are rooted in his rich imagination. His art evokes popular sayings, (disguised) figures, animals, plants, flowers, and (voluptuous) nudes. Each piece carries a long title, often written on the work itself, immersing the viewer in a magical universe that is sometimes burlesque, sometimes fairy-tale-like, but always brimming with joy and fantasy.
