Verpoorten Oscar
Engels: Oscar Verpoorten was a Belgian painter, born in Antwerp in 1895 and died there in 1948. He was the son of a goldsmith. He studied engraving at the Academy in Antwerp under the guidance of Lauwers and Ch. Mertens and was self-taught in painting. He produced landscapes (including nocturnal scenes), seascapes and harbor views, cityscapes, outdoor scenes, portraits, and figures. He employed a free and synthetic realism that indirectly shows an affinity with native Impressionism. In 1935, he became a teacher at the Academy in Berchem. In 1939, he was a founding member of the Circle 't Getij and was also a member of the groups Modern Art and Als Ick Kan. Oscar Verpoorten's works can be found in the Museum of Antwerp. He is listed in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
