Vandamme Jacques
Jacques Vandamme was a Belgian artist, born in Wervik in 1933 and died in Comines in 2002. Painter and draughtsman. Self-taught. Acquired technical mastery by copying the great masters. Debuted with landscapes and, from 1961 onwards, also painted flower pieces, still lifes and portraits. From 1966, his work evolved towards surrealism and fantasy. The woman, as a symbol, is almost omnipresent in his oeuvre: he created dreamlike landscapes with stately nude or draped figures. He received, among others, the Grand Prize of the city of Corte (Corsica, 1980), the Toyogafu Prize in Osaka (1980), and the Prize of the city of Nieuwpoort (1987). His work can be found in the Museum of Religious Art of the Diocese of Bruges, and in the museums of Tournai, Mouscron, Grasse and Menton. Listed in Lexicon van Westvlaamse beeldende kunstenaars III, BAS II, and Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars. (Piron)
