Van Santen Julien
Julien Van Santen was a Belgian artist, born in 1893 and deceased in 1936 or 1959. He was an etcher. He trained under Jef Codron in Brussels. From 1926 to 1934, he lived at 24 Rue Godecharle in Brussels. In his printing workshop, etchers such as R. Hebbelinck came to refine their technique. He had a complete mastery of colour etching. He created atmospheric city views with old houses, canal scenes with small bridges, landscapes, rural churches and figures. He illustrated Les Villages Illusoires by Emile Verhaeren (1929) with 17 aquatint etchings. He is said to have been in fragile health and to have died more likely in 1936 than in 1959. He is listed in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
