Van Noten Jean

Jean Van Noten (Brussels 1903 – 1982 Jette) • Painter, draftsman, designer of tapestries, stained glass windows, and stamps. Trained at the Academy in Brussels under C. Montald, E. Fabry, J. Delville, A. Crespin, and V. Horta. Debuted in 1929 at the Thémis gallery in Brussels. Watercolored many harbor and beach scenes, but also figures and nudes. He captured the impressions he gained during a trip to the Congo in pen drawings and sketches. More symbolist subjects appear in his tapestry cartoons, treated initially figuratively and later increasingly abstractly. Illustrated several books by Professor Frans Olbrechts. Served as artistic advisor to the Ministry of Economic Affairs from 1934 to 1961 and organized international exhibitions. Works include those in the Museums in Brussels and Antwerp. Mentioned in BAS II and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
