Tollmann Helmut

Helmut G. Tollmann is a German artist, born in Cologne/Germany in 1945. He is a photographer, painter and creator of installations and large screen projects. He trained as a graphic designer and studied graphics and design at the Cologne Werkschulen until 1968. Professionally he is a graphic designer and he works as a freelance artist. The evolution of his work can be divided into different periods. The first period is that of photography and painting and can be situated between 1965-1969. He won several photography and film awards during this period. In the period 1970-1974 he used new techniques. Influenced by the photographs of Max Ernst, he used representational painting and architectural and landscape painting. Here he used, among other things, frottage as a new technique. This period is characterized by its “soft landscapes”. From 1974 to 1985 he enriched his painting with reprographic and photographic elements. The first elements of technical and electronic processes appear in his art. In the period 1985-1997 he used new colors with which he experimented. The 'Soul of Chip' is introduced. His painting surfaces expand to include printed circuit boards and copper plates. From 1998 to 2007 he will work from the connecting aspect between technology and people. Since 2008 he has incorporated the globalized world into his art. In 2004 he portrayed Pope John Paul II (art project Sancto Subito). In the same year he was named best international artist at the Marina Art Festival in Ravenna. In his birthplace Cologne, Tollmann works on behalf of the city as well as on behalf of the KölnMesse for his monumental painting: The Eye of Trude Herr. (BT)
