Tielemans Emile Henri

Emile Henri (Henry) Tielemans was a Belgian artist, born in Leuven in 1883 and died in 1960, most likely in Rouen/France. (some sources mention Brussels as the place of death). He was a painter, draftsman, gouachist, illustrator, designer of bookplates, engraver on wood and jewelry and decorator. He received his education at the Academy in Brussels, where he also settled. He realized figures, nudes, symbolist compositions, orientalist inspired subjects that remind us of 1001 Nights. He also worked as a designer of jewelry, interiors and furniture. He was co-founder of La Gravure Originale Belge (1922-1939) and of the series of bookplate folders, in which numerous artists collaborated. The pure lines and refined design are particularly striking in his drawings. He illustrated, among other things, La princesse Madeleine (M. Materlinck). He exhibited with the Kring La Guirlande in Brussels in 1909. In 1914 he was registered to participate in the Salon Triennal in Brussels. He was a composition teacher at the Industrial School in Brussels. He moved to France in 1920 and to Rouen in 1940, where he worked under the Frenchified name Tilmans Emile Henry. Emile Tielemans is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
