Thys Joseph
Joseph Thys or Jos Thys was a Belgian artist who was born in 1891 in Liège and who died in 1970 in Elsene. He was a painter, sculptor and decorator. Mutilated on the right arm by a grenade on the Yser Front in 1918, he later learned to paint and sculpt with his left hand. As a painter he created landscapes, flowers, compositions with figures and later also graceful, exuberant café and cabaret interiors with (dancing) figures, but always in a smoothly stylized design. From the press about his landscapes, "His landscapes are harmoniously synthesized, brushed in a sober style and breathe a delicate poetry (1928)". As a sculptor, designer of busts and figures. His sculpture is characterized by a graceful synthesis. Work in the town hall in Aalst, in the Musée de l'Art Wallon in Liège. Mentioned in BAS II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists.
