Belgische Leuvense kunstenaar Theo Humblet

Humblet Theo

Theo Humblet was a Belgian artist born in 1919 in Leuven and died in 2006 in Rotselaar. He was a painter, graphic artist, woodcarver, illustrator, sculptor and ceramist. He studied at the Academy in Leuven and at Sint-Lukas in Schaerbeek. He traveled to Yugoslavia, Japan, Mexico and Spain. He evolved from neo-impressionism to expressionism to a more constructive poetic symbolism. From the press: “As early as the 1950s, his interest in the woman's portrait and the female nude had such an impact that he abandoned the usual way of presenting these themes and opted for a more traditional line. He reached the limits of abstraction in the second half of the 1960s, but never took the final, definitive step. The narrative elements increased strongly in his paintings. This storytelling trend culminated in its well-known stacking constructions: single and multiple compartments, each with house horizons that together form a story" and "His characters emerge from an urban or social landscape and stare ahead, amazed, upset, more musing than acting". He was director at the Academy in Leuven from 1959 to 1979. Work among others in the Print Room in Brussels, in the Museum in Kortrijk. (PIRON)
