Bauters Sonja
Sonja, Rosalia Bauters is a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1938. She is a painter and ceramist. She studied at the Academy and the Higher Institute in Antwerp and was a pupil of Gustaaf De Bruyne. Her works depict a reality distorted by dreams. She employs a refined and technically meticulous design. Her aristocratic, static figures sometimes recall the Flemish primitives. From the press: "Symbolism and aesthetics, poetry and virtuosity, dream and nostalgia, emotion and an intense dialogue between the creator on one hand, and the material, color, rhythm, the depicted, the suggestive, the visible, and the subcutaneous on the other." Sonja Bauters worked as a teacher at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas. She is listed in BAS II and "Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists" (Piron).
