Selen Max
Max Selen (Turnhout 1932) · Painter, graphic artist. Education at the Academy in Turnhout and at the National Higher Institute in Antwerp under the tutelage of J. Van Vlasselaer and J. Vaerten (1956–1961). Hyperrealistic design. Became a teacher at the Academy in Turnhout. From the press: 'From 1971 onwards, M.S. holds an important place among the hyperrealists. Before that, he had undergone a major evolution. From 1961 to 1964, he worked with various stylistic techniques, including Cubist with an Expressionist foundation. In 1965, he briefly leans towards Surrealism; from 1969 onwards, he adopts Pop elements and shows a preference for sanitary fixtures. Together with Wittevrongel, he becomes a leading figure in that movement.' Subsequently, women also became an obsessive source of inspiration. Exhibited, among others, with 'Kempische schilders van onze tijd' in Antwerp in 1968. Work purchased by the State in 1964. Retrospective exhibition at the Art Center Hugo Voeten in Herentals in 2014.
