Seghers Maurice
Maurice Segers was a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1883 and passing away in the same city in 1959. He was a painter, watercolourist and graphic artist, and the son of Henri Seghers Jr. He trained at the Academy in Antwerp. During the First World War he settled in England with his family, after having moved through the Netherlands, the Flemish coast and northern France. In 1918 he was nevertheless called up for military service and stationed in France. He painted landscapes but showed a clear preference for marine subjects. He found his themes in the port of Antwerp and along the Belgian coast, including in Nieuwpoort and Ostend. His work reflects a strong interest in light and accents, aligned with impressionism. Like his father, he often evoked the image of the port of Antwerp, the ships mooring there and the bustling activity. His oeuvre spans the period between 1909 and 1955. He is listed in BAS II and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
