Scherpereel Koen
Koen Scherpereel was a Belgian artist, born in Bruges in 1961 and died in Ghent in 1997. He was a painter, watercolorist and graphic artist. He studied plastic arts and free graphics at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. Life and his immediate surroundings were his inexhaustible source of inspiration. Among other things, he realized scenes and compositions with figures that often tend towards the caricature. he sometimes gave a poetic, mostly contemplative-ironic look at society. From the press: 'In his own personal style, K.S. are feelings of friendship, love and hate. Like a piece of crystal, it reflects, in an explosion of shapes and colours, the light of life it receives. His work is a mixture of dream and reality, of reason and madness. His imagination knows no bounds.' and 'The artist is not playing games. Everything he does and experiences is translated into words and images with astonishing ease and an urge that is not at all feigned.' (H. Brutin) Koen Scherpereel died as a result of an explosion in his studio. He is mentioned in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists v, BAS II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists.
