Schakewits Josef
Jozef (Josephus) Schakewits was a Belgian painter, born in Meise in 1848 and died in Strombeek-Bever in 1913. He studied at the Academy in Brussels (1869–1870 and 1872–1874). In 1876, he received an honourable mention (third prize) in the Prix de Rome. From 1885 to 1904, he lived and worked in Lokeren. Between 1875 and 1883, he occasionally stayed in Normandy. His work can be divided into two stylistic periods: Romanticism and Realism; Impressionism passed him by. His palette was mainly composed of grey and brown tones. He painted landscapes, marine scenes, genre scenes and still lifes. In 1888, he became chief editor of the weekly De Lokeraar. He exhibited at the Triennial Salons in Ghent in 1883, 1886 and 1889, in Brussels in 1875, 1887 and 1890, and in Antwerp in 1879, 1882 and 1888.
