Sanders Edmond
Edmond Sanders was a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1898 and died in Antwerp in 1961. He was a flower painter and draftsman. During his secondary studies in Lier, he was taught by Raymond Delahaye and later pursued further training at the Normal School in Lier. After the First World War, he returned to Antwerp.
He made his debut as a draftsman, drawing inspiration mainly from the picturesque corners and immaculate streets of the beguinage. Professionally, he was active in education and dedicated himself to creating didactic illustrations for schools. In the 1920s, he trained with Frans Mortelmans and developed into a flower painter. He also occasionally produced landscapes and still lifes.
His works are marked by a harmonious blend of poetry and realism. From the press (1947): “Each work by E.S. goes straight to the heart like a completed poem; there is music resonating from the movement and fluidity of the richly colored, atmospheric flowers.”
In 1953, he retired as a school director within the municipal education system. He exhibited, among others, at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi in 1955 and at Galerie Portenart in Brussels in 1958. His grave is located at the Schoonselhof cemetery in Antwerp.
