Meerbergen Rudolf
Rudolf Meerbergen was a Belgian artist who was born in Antwerp in 1908 and who died in Charente-Maritime/France in 1987. He was a painter. Education at the Academy and the Higher Institute in Antwerp under the direction of A. Ciamberlani and Is. Opsomer (1926-1932). Exhibited for the first time in the Cercle Artistique in Antwerp in 1935. In 1945 he became a member of the Jeune Peinture Belge. Debuted with lyrical portraits. Then followed an expressionist period with mythological scenes and larger than life figures in brown and white. After the Second World War, the design became more graceful. Evolved around 1950 into geometric abstract works, often with a mythical slant. Always had a great interest in occultism and teosophy. From 1950 was an editor of the magazine "Tijd en Mens". Traveled to France, Spain and Portugal. Was a teacher at the Academy in Antwerp (1966-1977). Ended his life in 1987. Work in the Museums in Brussels and Antwerp.
