Materne Roland

Roland Materne is a Belgian artist who was born in 1945 in Oleye/Waremme. He is a painter, printmaker, watercolorist and designer of decorative and sculptural compositions. Training at the Academy in Liège under the direction of P. Daxhelet and M. Debattice. Realized large, sometimes baroque compositions, often inspired by old Italian painting style and Venetian masks. Themes like motherhood, love, death are sometimes treated in a surrealizing way. Painter of a monumental fresco on the subject of the wool industry (Verviers 1987, in collaboration with P. Graitson). Exhibited in the Ymca in Liège in 1964 and in the Atheneum in Waremme in 1956. Was a teacher at the Municipal Institute of Arts and Crafts and at the Academy in Verviers. Source: Piron
