Saey René (Renaat)

René Saey (Renaat) was a Belgian artist who was born in 1913 in Sint-Joris-ten-Distel and who died in 1996 in Ghent. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolourist, pastelist and illustrator. After a stay in Spain and Argentina until 1954, he entered the Academy at the age of almost 40. Had already become acquainted with painting in Buenos Aires through the Estimulo de Bellas Artes. Realized South American landscapes, but also painted landscapes from his own region, torsos still lifes with flowers, mushrooms, stones, fossils, skulls, corals. Evolved from post-expressionism to personal fantasy. His painting is situated in the romantic domains of an imaginary, undersea or subterranean world. From the press: 'In depicting a world of fungi, shells, mysterious shapes, R.S. himself as an extremely brilliant colorist, delicate, pure, accurate in the choice and arrangement of the tonalities, in the subtle echoes and recalls of color planes', and 'He suggests. He lifts the figures, the animals, the things and the plants to a visionary level.' He is also the author of a collection of poems in which he explains his position against abortion. Work purchased by the State in 1967. Work in the museum in Deurle, among others. Mentioned in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists I, BAS II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists.
