Proost Frans

Frans Proost was a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1866 and died in Antwerp in 1941. He was a painter, draughtsman, decorator and poster designer. He studied at the Academy in Antwerp under the guidance of Verlat. In 1886 he took part in the preliminary competition for the Prix de Rome. He created landscapes, genre scenes and figure compositions. In 1892 he exhibited at the 35th exhibition in the Casino of Ghent, organized on the occasion of the centenary of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Ghent, with works including At Grandmother’s and Budding Love. He was a member of the circle Als Ik Kan in Antwerp. According to unverified sources, he died in 1941. He is listed in BAS I and in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists (Piron).
