Planque Jean-Marie

Jean-Marie Planque was a Belgian artist, born in Tournai in 1932 and died in Brussels in 1992. He was a painter, pastellist, draftsman, watercolorist and graphic artist. He received his education at the Academy in Tournai under the guidance of E. Salkin (1942-1946), at the ABS School in Paris (1955-1957), at the Academy in Sint-Joost-ten Node under the guidance of J. Maes ( 1962-1964), at the Academy of Molenbeek under the guidance of De Muylder (1963-1964) and at the Academy C. Meunier in Etterbeek under the guidance of Frans Mabille (1967-1972). He realized cityscapes, landscapes, figures, portraits and still lifes. He processed reality to the point of geometric abstraction. He evolved from lyrical and graphically structured compositions to abstraction. He could especially indulge himself in his drawings, which were often constructed from a few spontaneous, flexible or angular lines. From the press: “J.M.P. soon gave up on figuration and began to testify in his works to his love for line, his passion for color and the systematic dissolution or deconstruction of reality. He placed people, the city and nature at the center of his work. Groups of figures and individuals are the actors within this gigantic fresco that does not reveal all its wealth at a first glance. Now and then a heavy letter or word comes to reinforce the work. The rich, extraordinarily lively lines that synthesize and analyze in one movement can be found throughout his oeuvre.” (2005) He received the first prize for painting from the Constant Meunier Academy. He exhibited in the cultural center in Oudergem in 1972, in La Ferme Rose in Uccle in 1976, in the Pilgrims House in Sint-Gillis/Brussels in 1994, in the Maison de la Culture in Tournai in 1995, in the museum in Mouscron in 1999, At Lineart in Ghent in 2000, in the Museo Salvini in Cocquio/Italy in 2001 and in the Horizons gallery in Brussels in 2002. We find a geometric-abstract work by him in the museums in Tournai, Mouscron in the Museo Salvini in Cocquio in Italy. Bibliography was written in J.M.P Itinéraire dans une oeuvre, by A. Nardon in an exhibition catalogue, BBA Editions, Brussels, 1994. Jean-Marie Planque is mentioned in Artists and galleries 1996 and 1997, in the fourth and fifth editions and in Two centuries of signatures by Belgian artists. (Piron)
