Van Engelen Piet (Pierre)

Piet (Pierre) Van Engelen was a Belgian artist who was born in Lier in 1863 and who died in Antwerp in 1924. He was a painter. Brother of Louis Van Engelen. Training at the Academy in Liège under P. Drion, at the Academy in Antwerp under C. Verlat, E. Dujardin and L. Schaefels. He mainly focused on animal painting. Initially, these scenes were purely decorative and conceived as still life. Gradually his works became more lively by portraying folk sayings, symbols, etc. He also painted genre scenes, portraits. In 1894, together with R. Mols, he realized the Congodiorama for the World Exhibition in Antwerp. Was a member of the Als Ick Kan Group. Became a teacher at the Academy in Antwerp in 1897. Work o>.m. in the Museums in Liège and Antwerp. Mentioned in BAS II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
