Gilles Piet

Piet Gilles was a Dutch/Belgian artist who was born in Alkmaar/Netherlands in 1908 and died in Leuven in 1995. He was a painter and draftsman. Settled in Leuven in 1922. Training at the Academies in Leuven, Lier and Brussels. Realized landscapes, portraits, still lifes. Debuted in a gloomy expressionist design and subsequently leaned towards animism and the Young Belgian Painting. He was not spared illness and grief: tuberculosis, death of siblings, father who went insane, destruction of his oeuvre in 1944 and his mother paralyzed. He portrayed all that human tragedy in a poignant pastel cycle Life and Death (1950s), which he donated to the university library. In later years he went through a magical-realistic period, in which he symbolically portrayed the worries of the past with cats and birds. From the press: "P.G. interweaves in his artworks typical properties and characteristics of the art styles that were discussed this century. "Work in the Museum in Leuven, among others. Mentioned in BAS I, II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. Source: Piron
