Belgische kunstenaar uit Gent Pierre Vlerick

Vlerick Pierre

Pierre Vlerick was a Belgian artist born in Ghent in 1923 and died there in 1999. He was a painter. Education at the Academy in Ghent, conducted by J. Verdegem (1947-1948), at the Grande Chaumière in Paris, conducted by O. Friesz. Debuted as an abstract impressionist. The admiration he has shown since 1947, after a visit to a P. Bonnard exhibition for his work and for the art of the Nabi painters, is closely related to his need for a refined and harmoniously elaborated interplay of subtle light and color effects. For a long time he created almost monochrome paintings with a lot of white, worked lyrically abstract and came to a sophisticated hyper-realistic design. In the 1970s the photographic depiction disappeared and his works began to reflect magical realism. From the press: “In his imagery, suggestion and sensibility meet in a general atmosphere of sensuality and allusions. The slender and luminous color also contributes to the ethereal aspect of his view of people and things.” (1977). Was one of the promoters of the Groups La Relève and Young Flemish Art, with which he exhibited repeatedly. From 1961 teacher and later, from 1970 to 1988, director at the Academy in Ghent. In 1963 visiting professor at the Fine Arts School in Boston/United States. Participated in the 1964 Venice Biennale. Work in the Museums in Ghent, Antwerp, Ostend and Brussels, among others. Mentioned in Bas II and Two Centuries Signatures of Belgian Artists. (PIRON)
