Alechinsky Pierre

Pierre Alechinsky is a Belgian artist who was born in Brussels in 1927. He has lived and worked in France since 1951. He is a painter, draftsman and graphic artist. Training in typography and book illustration at La Cambre in Brussels (1944-1946). Met Christian Dotremont and became a member of Cobra in 1949. As a left-handed boy at school forced to write with the right hand, he nevertheless drew with the left hand from an early age. Moved to Paris in 1951, where he studied printing techniques with S.W. Hayter. He settled in Paris after the dissolution of Cobra. After a trip to Japan, where he learned calligraphy, and after discovering acrylic paint at Walasse Ting, he started painting on large papers spread on the floor. From the press: 'Lines and brushstrokes are intuitively brought together in bright, sometimes blaring colors, such as green, yellow and blue. They form a visual writing system, in which the figuration can always be found.' Prize of the Jeune Peinture Belge in 1950. Work in the Museum in Brussels, among others.
