Swyncop Philippe
Philippe Swyncop was a Belgian artist who was born in Brussels in 1878 and who died in 1949 in Saint-Gilles/Brussels. He was a painter, draftsman, printmaker and illustrator. Older brother of Charles Swyncop. Training at the Academy in Brussels under the direction of J. Portaels and C. Montald (1892-1898). Godecharle Prize in 1900. Before 1924, he painted almost exclusively portraits. Traveled to France, Italy and in 1924 fell under the spell of Spain, where he stayed for twelve years and effortlessly found inspiration in the landscape, the inhabitants, the gitanas and the young Spanish women. Realized portraits, figures, nudes, landscapes and still lifes. Clear and vivid realistic design. Was a member of Le Sillon. Made allegorical scenes on the ceilings of the Kursaal in Ostend and the Casino in Spa. Also designed numerous cover drawings for the weekly Pourqoui Pas?. Illustrated La femme nue de Goya (B. Ibanez), Salammbo (G. Flaubert), La femme et le Pantin (P. Louys). Work in the Museum in Brussels (Portrait of Brand Whitlock), in the Vleeshuis in Antwerp, in the Museum in Leuven.
