Peleman Wies
Wies Peleman was a Belgian artist, born in Mechelen in 1922 and died in Willebroek in 1995. He was a ceramist, draftsman, illustrator, painter and jewelery designer. He studied drawing and painting at the Academy in Mechelen. Trained as a painter and draftsman, he started in 1964 as a self-taught ceramic artist. He leans towards fantasy. His images come across as unreal and unirical. Often they are grinning, twisted, burnt and broken-wheeled figures. He participated in group exhibitions at home and abroad, including Ankara/Turkey, Bradford/United Kingdom, Skoplje/Yugoslavia, Montreal/Canada, Marseille/France, Aachen and Cologne in Germany and in South Africa. Individual exhibitions were held in the Zaal Nova in Mechelen, in De Zolder and the municipal banquet hall in Willebroek, and in the Zwarte Panter in Antwerp. He won prizes for his cartoons in Montreal/Canada and Skoplje/Yugoslavia. Wies Peleman was a teacher at the Institute for Arts and Crafts in Mechelen. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
