Pauwaert Maurice

Pauwaert Maurice

Maurice Pauwaert was a Belgian artist who was born in Ghent in 1889 and died there in 1965. He was a painter, watercolourist and humorous draftsman. Brother of Marie-Louise Pauwaert. Educated at the Academy in Ghent under the direction of G. Minne and J. Delvin. Lived in England for 5 years and learned the watercolour technique there. Was friends with E. Claus, A. Baertsoen and C. Permeke. As the son of an Ostend native, he was strongly fascinated by boats and the sea. Was therefore mainly active as a watercolourist of seascapes, ships and various types of boats, depicted on the water. Also found inspiration in the North Sea, the Scheldt, in Veere and in Venice. Published a magazine, a nautical magazine, Sur l'eau where he wrote articles and provided illustrations. Also drew carilatures and humorous drawings, usually also in connection with seafaring. Co-founder of the Société belge des peintres de la mer. Mentioned in Crick and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
