Van Den Abeele Paul

Paul Van Den Abeele was a Belgian artist who was born in 1929 in Aalst and who died in 2014 in Erembodegem. He was a photographer, photo reporter, etcher and painter. Education in drawing and sculpture at the Academies in Aalst and Antwerp. Initially more attracted to sculpture, he quickly opted for painting. He made his debut at the end of the Second World War and was initially strongly influenced by Flemish expressionism, but evolved into more poetic work: lovers in the park, walkers in the woods. Death also occasionally plays a role in his compositions with figures. Later on, he gained world fame as a photographer. Worked as a press photographer for the daily newspaper De Standaard. Author of several photo books. Also printed bibliophile books on manual press. Was awarded the State Prize in 1988 for his career as an artist. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
