Nikolaas Mathijs Eekman was a Belgian/Dutch artist who was born in Brussels in 1889 and who died in Paris in 1973. He was a figurative painter and illustrator who also enjoyed fame in France. He was a watercolorist, architect, sculptor, etcher, graphic artist, engraver (printmaker), wood engraver, illustrator, lithographer, pen artist, painter and draftsman. In Belgium and the Netherlands he is known as Nicolas Eekman or Nico Eekman and under the pseudonym Ekma. His painting style can be characterized in three periods: expressionistic from 1914 to the late 1920s, Flemish realist at the beginning of the 1950s, and finally 'fantastique'.
