De Keyser Nicaise

Nicaise De Keyser was a Belgian artist who was born in Zandvliet in 1813 and who died in Antwerp in 1887. He was a painter and draftsman. Training at the Academy in Antwerp under the direction of Jos Jacobs and M. Van Brée. Made a study trip to Italy. Romantic classicist. Quickly acquired great fame. Together with G. Wappers, his rival, he was one of the leading figures of Belgian Romanticism. Realized portraits, historical and religious compositions, domestic scenes, murals. Defender of history painting, attached to the pictorial values ​​of the past, trusting in the school as the necessary condition to achieve a solid painterly craft and convinced that art is an ennobled nature. Realized the decoration work in the vestibule of the Museum in Antwerp (1861-1872). Was director at the Academy in Antwerp from 1855 to 1879.
