Nellens Roger

Roger Nellens was a Belgian painter, born in Liège in 1937 and died in Knokke-Heist in 2021. He was self-taught. In 1960 he made his debut with painting. In the beginning he was influenced by Permeke, but P. Delvaux, from whom he received advice and support, started painting trains and signals. From 1969 his 'Imaginary machines' were created. From the press: “R.N. belongs, together with Picabia, Duchamp, Ernst and Tinguely, among others, to a group of artists who chase the delusions of the machines. What was first intended to help us, has gradually been supplanted by man', and 'with R.N. the machines lose their aggressiveness, he illustrates their poetic dimension and in this way has built up an entirely personal iconography. He is listed in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists I, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
