Muylaert Monique
Monique Muylaert was a Belgian artist, born in Kerksken (Haaltert) in 1946 and deceased in 2021. She was a ceramist and the spouse of Herman Muys. She studied at the Academy in Aalst (1964) and at the Higher Institute in Antwerp (1965–1969).
She mainly created panels on which, through small forms and delicate elements, carefully composed and refined arrangements emerged. These sophisticated ceramics could function as wall sculptures. She often collaborated with her husband on monumental commissions.
From the press: “The base of her works is often a two-dimensional surface in which irregularities settle, where structures appear like small hills in a flat landscape, little towers, pitched tents, a presence that has taken on the colour of the plain or the desert,” and: “The landscapes, the deserts, the stone-like paintings of M.M., with their textures of scratches and incisions, have in recent years evolved towards a more tangible relief and suggest the idea of still lifes in which certain fruits could even be named.” (1995)
In 1986, she became a teacher at the Academy in Aalst, and from 1971 to 1974 she taught at the Institute for Creative Education in Hoogstraten. (Piron)
