Mortier Marcel

Marcel Mortier was a Belgian artist, born in Brussels in 1919 and deceased in France in 2005. He was a painter, musician, singer, and guitar teacher. He was the son and pupil of Emile Mortier. He spent eighteen months in Egypt, where he drew considerable inspiration. He painted landscapes of Provence and Flanders, Egyptian faces and figures, Parisian city views, still lifes, and scenes from circus life. His work is marked by a synthesized style. His palette is often dominated by soft, almost melancholic tones. He exhibited with his father at Galerie Lautrec in Brussels in 1956, at Galerie Mont des Arts in Brussels in 1958, and at Galerie Le Régent in Brussels in 1962. A retrospective exhibition was held at the town hall of Saint-Gilles in 2002. He is listed in Kunstenaars en galerijen, fourth edition (2000), and in BAS I, II and Two Centuries of Signatures by Belgian Artists. (Piron)
