Frans Mortelmans was an Antwerp artist who was born in 1865 and died there in 1936. He was a painter, watercolourist, pastelist, lithographer. Brother of the composer Lodewijk Mortelmans. Education at the academy in Antwerp under L. Schaefels and C. Verlat, afterwards at the Higher Institute in Antwerp under A. De Vriendt. Was also a student of F. Van Leemputten for a short time. Painter of still lifes and especially flowers. Initially also painted a number of portraits and figures, but after he started working in his own studio in 1892, he devoted himself almost exclusively to still lifes and flowers: decorative, harmoniously constructed works. Impressionistic touch, realistic design. Was a teacher at the Academy in Berchem and also acted as director during his last years of service. Work in the Museums in Antwerp, Ostend and Kortrijk.
