Verburgh Médard

Médard Verburgh was a Belgian artist who was born in 1886 in Roeselare and who died in 1957 in Uccle. He was a painter, watercolourist, draftsman and etcher. Training at the Academy in Roeselare under G. Pieters and G. Vallays (1905-1907) and at the Academy in Brussels under Montald (1907-1911). Often visited L'Effort's free studio and became friends with the group of the Brabant Fauvists. Made a study trip to Italy in 1913. Realized figures, nudes, portraits, landscapes, marines and still lifes. Debuted impressionistically but from about 1914 he started to synthesize the form more and preferred pure colours. Following the example of Cézanne, he also began to build up his compositions more. Stayed in New York around 1930, then went to Ibiza and Mallorca until 1947. Stayed true to a moderate form of expressionist Fauvism. Work in the Museums in Antwerp, Brussels, Ixelles. Mentioned in the Lexicon of the West Flemish visual artists II, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. Source: Piron
