Mazy Marcel

Marcel Mazy was a Belgian sculptor, born in Ougrée in 1931 and died in Borgerhout in 2014. He trained at the Academy and at the Higher Institute in Antwerp under the supervision of H. Puvrez. From 1959 he was a teacher at the Academy in Antwerp, from 1976 director for several years at the Academy in Hoboken and from 1985 a teacher at the Hoger Instituut in Antwerp. He designed sober, welded iron structures that suggest people or objects. from the press: “The work of M.M. shows fantasy and imagination, and not just lighthearted playfulness. The world and society view he expresses is more than that of a concerned artist. The human personification in his work is imagined through violated people. Wounded men and women, resilient figures, who free themselves from the limitations and lack of freedom imposed on them, as proud beings. Yet his oeuvre is neither pathetic nor narrative at all. It speaks to our feelings as much as our reason. (F.J.) Marcel Mazy is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
