Verbist Maurits

Maurits Verbist was a Belgian artist who was born in 1913 in Neerijse and who died in 1984 in Veltem-Beisem. He was a painter, draftsman and watercolorist. Training at the Academies in Sint-Joost-ten-Node, Schaerbeek, Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe and at La Cambre. He preferred landscapes, seascapes, farm scenes, figures, nudes and still lifes. Through his painting he showed his great interest in village life, popular entertainment and popular devotion. He is regarded to be seen as the last true representative of Flemish expressionism. Met Edgard Tytgat, who would become one of his best friends, in the free drawing studio in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Took over the free drawing studio around 1950 and added a graphics studio in 1952. During the last ten years of his life he made many more travels and thus came to Yugoslavia, Mexico, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland and France. These travels were of course a rich source of inspiration for his later work and influenced his color palette. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
